Where it all Began...
In the affluent town of
Southport, the Houldsworth family reigned as the epitome of upper-class
prosperity. Generations of Houldsworths' amassed their wealth, establishing
themselves as the richest and most influential figures in the county at the
time. Emerging from the back streets of two up two down terraces in Kirby Liverpool,
known as dockers’ mansions.
Beyond their opulent
estates and esteemed status, the Houldsworths' conducted an unconventional but
lucrative shanking/shrimping business for a select clientele. Amidst the lavish
lifestyle, a substantial fortune measured in hundreds of thousands, was
discreetly safeguarded within the family's impenetrable safes, when the enterprise
began to flourish during the mid-1800’s.
The hidden safes became
the cornerstone of the Houldsworth legacy, ensuring both financial dominance
and an aura of mystery which surrounded the family, even up to this day. Two
hundred years later and Elisha John Houldsworth Wright, a scion of the esteemed
lineage, emerged from the heart of Cheltenham to embark on his journey.
His roots intertwined
with the town's rich history, and particularly its fervour for horse racing.
Elisha found himself drawn to the equestrian world. Along with inheriting the powerful
Houldsworth name, Elisha began to pursue a passion for the exhilarating sport
that defined Cheltenham as the home of national hunt racing.
As the Houldsworths' moved
on from their shrimping enterprise in the 1920s, Elisha sought to diversify the
family's pursuits and ignite the flame of the Houldsworth family once more.
Inspired by his Cheltonian roots, he ventured into the world of horse racing,
establishing a connection between the Houldsworth legacy and the thrilling
races that captivated the town. The Houldsworth family esteems to reach the heights
of the past, where they were just not wealthy benefactors, but aim to be patrons
of the beloved equestrian tradition and the racing community.
In the eyes of
Southport’s past, the Houldsworth family were more than just the richest; they
were treated reverently in their pursuit for community. Their opulence and
echelons, combined with contributions to both commerce and culture, elevated
the Houldsworth’s to a status that extended beyond wealth – a legacy. Today,

of Cheltenham's identity in Houldsworth of Cheltenham, a unique designer racing
